Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.

Job Description

This role offers a challenging and exciting personal environment as well as the opportunity to grow as a core contributor to the digital transformation of Landing Systems Engineering and Airbus alongside the Airbus Digital Transformation Office.

It is located within the Airbus Landing Systems Engineering Centre of Competence (IL) in Filton, Bristol UK.

·  We are seeking a highly motivated “data scientist” holding core technical skills and experience in data analytics and data science whilst equally having a strong intrapreneurial mindset.
·  You are passionate about understanding the problem by gaining relevant technical engineering and product knowledge. Equally you understand the engineering point of view and are able to coach and mentor traditional mindsets to see the value in a data science approach to problem solving.
·  You anticipate the future, you listen carefully to your customers and you lead strategic change to deliver digital solutions that bring maximum business value.

About Our Team

At Airbus we have consistently proven our ability to deliver market leading products that exploit state of the art aerospace technology. With this competitive advantage in mind, in 2015 Airbus created a Digital Transformation Office (DTO) responsible for rapidly exploring, developing and deploying digital technologies that improve our operational and product performance, our employees’ workplace and to increase revenues and profits.

We have since established Skywise (Airbus’s leading aviation data platform and eco-system) forging close digitally enabled relationships with our customers and other key players along the aircraft life-cycle. It is now key for the business to deploy talent to exploit these powerful tools and data resources.

With this in mind we are imminently launching the Digital Hive: An empowered “startup” within the business that seeks to disrupt our current ways of working through the identification, acquisition, co-development and co-deployment of state of the art digital solutions.  The Hive has an open digital culture that is customer focussed and agile.  Over time we aim to spread our ways of working and digital values deep into the business through the realisation of digital awareness and career paths. In these missions, we have the support and investment of top Airbus leadership.

What you will be doing:

You will play a pivotal role in building the Digital Hive as one of the founding members. Within an agile team we all take the opportunity to lead leveraging our diverse skills. We collectively achieve the team's objectives because we are confident we can rely on each other. We each accept accountability for our individual contributions.

The Digital Hive objectives include:

·  Seek out, clarify and understand business value opportunities where we can transform the current process, products or services.
·  Architect and then break down digital solutions into achievable tasks.
·  Implement data analytics and data science methods including performing hands-on work to build integrated data sets, analyse data sources (ML/AI), and build compelling interactive visualizations (typically using Python, R, Spark).
·  Share our knowledge and best practises, contribute to driving change within the digital network, and present and communicate within the digital community.

You will apply your skill set in the context of landing systems development for large commercial aircraft. This is an exciting challenge because it is an incredibly complex area of aerospace engineering which is ripe for digital transformation.

Norman S Curry states, “That landing gear design encompasses more engineering disciplines than any other aspect of aircraft design”. To design a landing system you must take a true multi-disciplinary approach which includes the utilisation of numerous state of the art materials, advanced structural mechanisms with static and dynamic cases, integration with flight physics and highly sophisticated electrical and hydraulic control systems. Furthermore, the landing system interfaces to many other systems, operates in an extreme environment and is critical to the safety of the aircraft.

The maintenance and operating costs of the landing system are also key to our airline customers which is then vital to the diversification of the Airbus business model through digital services. An example of this are Skywise prognostic services enabled by taking an Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) approach to the design of the landing gear product.

For this role, we are open to discussing the possibility of reduced hours, remote working, flexible start and finish times. Please wait until the job offer stage before asking us about flexibility, and we will explore what is possible for the role.

About You:

We welcome all applicants from varied technical backgrounds and experiences. We value someone who:

·  Brings authentic leadership by understanding and nurturing the potential within our diverse, global environment.
·  Gives energy, sets a vision, and empowers others to achieve.
·  Has the personal resilience to challenge the status quo and is comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment.

It is highly desirable to have proven experience in:

·  Leading and executing data science projects
·  Project management experience: deliver a concrete result to a customer
·  Understanding, structuring, and integrating data (e.g., fields, data quality, ranges, volume, etc.)
·  Inferential statistics / machine learning (e.g. statistical testing, clustering, PCA, SVM, random forests, regression, neural networks)

Relevant tools

·  Agile tools (e.g. Jira), Dev Ops, Gsuite.
·  Significant working experience one or more of the following languages: Python, R, Java, Matlab, Spark,
·  Experience using data visualization tools (e.g. Spotfire, Javascript, RShiny, Tableau).

Additional relevant knowledge that may differentiate you:

·  Understanding of big data system architectures (e.g., HDFS, Spark)
·  Experience working with unstructured data (e.g. text, images, video)
·  Working with other digital technologies including cloud, web, IoT and mixed reality.

Please ensure that a covering letter detailing motivations and suitability for this position is included in your application.

“I’ve worked for Airbus UK for the last 17 years and it has been a great company to progress in as a female engineer.

I have enjoyed regular travel to our European sites and liaised with engineers from all around the world. More recently I even got chance to work as a volunteer for Airbus Charity in India building schools for under privileged children.

I’ve held various engineering positions throughout my time but have always been able to adapt the roles to support my career and life as a mother -

I have worked both part-time and flexibly around early school years regularly working from home to maintain that important work life balance and now I manage a small team of structural engineers building mathematical models of aircraft wings for all the airbus fleet!”

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.

By submitting your CV or application you are consenting to Airbus using and storing information about you for monitoring purposes relating to your application or future employment. This information will only be used by Airbus.
