The Associate Scientist will join the Exploratory Biology group within Biologics Discovery to support all therapeutic areas (TA) at Janssen Biotherapeutics. They will be part of a team validating novel targets, including complex membrane ones, to support pre-clinical and early clinical research. The candidate's responsibilities include: developing binding and functional assays to characterize targets, developing functional assays for in vitro pharmacology, developing assays to evaluate novel mechanisms of action, and developing membrane-integral antigens for immunization and screening. Experience in functional assays in oncology and immunology, flow cytometry, and cell culture is required. The successful candidate needs to have a strong ability to connect with other colleagues in Biotherapeutics and TA partners in a collaborative environment. They are expected to present scientific results to multidisciplinary teams.

Primary responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
·  Perform literature research, design, perform and interpret in vitro and ex vivo experiments to characterize targets and provide functional readouts. Relevant assays and skills include: primary cell fractionation, binding assays, and various functional assays (especially pertaining to immunology and oncology). Troubleshoot where necessary.
·  Analyze and present data in professional 'publication ready' format.
·  Demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage multiple experiments simultaneously.
·  Keep up-to-date with the literature in his/her field.
·  Demonstrate clear and professional verbal and written communication.

Desired profile

Qualifications

·  Master's Degree in life sciences (molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related discipline) OR a Bachelor's Degree in life science with 3 years of experience is required.
·  Experience in multi-color flow cytometry is required; experience in cell sorting preferred.
·  Experience in cell-based functional assays is required.
·  Experience with testing antibodies in functional assays in vitro is preferred.
·  Experience working in industry is preferred.
