Job Description Summary

GE Vernova’s Power Conversion business provides electrification systems that are critical to customers’ power and energy needs for their high-performance applications. We work with some of the world’s major energy, maritime and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives and control technologies.

Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented Control Software Engineer to join GE Power Conversion’s Control and Automation Systems Engineering group and contribute to the development of our next generation products.

As the Control Software Engineer, you will be responsible for software development, validation, and integration of control functions to meet migration of centralised power management system control to a distributed control structure. You will also take care of maintaining and evolving all UK drive standard application code.

In this technical role, you will work within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, code and validate control algorithms used for Marine, Naval, Energy (µGrid) and Industry applications.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Managing the design, development, and maintenance of software, including code fixes, documentation, and user interfaces, of our standard application code for UK power management and UK drive control.
  • Converting theoretical model-based design into control functionality of power management systems.
  • Writing software with a standard application code structure to enable reusability and transferability.
  • Writing PLC software using IEC 61131-3 programming languages e.g., Ladder diagram (LD), Function block diagram (FBD), Structured text (ST), Instruction list (IL), and Sequential function chart (SFC).
  • Verification of power system control functionality/performance through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test setups.
  • Working closely with Product Management/Leadership to translate requirements from initial design into detailed design, through levels of testing and validation and maintenance.
  • Providing technical advice and assistance to the sales, commissioning, and service teams.

We are looking for a committed and professional individual with:

  • A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics or Industrial Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent), or significant relevant experience gained in a professional engineering environment.
  • Good knowledge of software design and implementation, coupled with a solid understanding of power system control principles and drive control algorithms.
  • Rigid mental attitude towards standard application code structuring.
  • Previous experience of an entire industrial software Product Life Cycle.
  • Comprehensive understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and methods/approaches underlying the design and writing of software for a real-time environment.
  • Knowledge of C-code programming and awareness of embedded software design, microprocessor & FPGA programming.
  • Experience of interpreting simulation model output and incorporating into standard application code.
  • Commitment to your work with a pragmatic approach; a good sense of quality and a can-do mentality.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to establish good team working relations.
  • Unrestricted Right to Work in the United Kingdom.

What will make you stand out:

  • Good understanding of floating point and integer mathematics.
  • Knowledge of Industrial communication protocols e.g. Modbus (RTU/TCP IP), OPC-UA, Profibus, Profinet etc.
  • Knowledge/awareness of Operational Technology (OT) cyber security.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A growth mindset and motivation to learn.

You can expect from us:

  • Challenging and exciting projects.
