Job description

Description

Job title: Thermal Modeling Engineer

The Role:

The Gigafactory Engineering team is looking for a talented and innovative thermal engineer who will help us develop the most advanced, large scale, industrial thermal systems. In thisroleyou will be asked to simulate and analyze thermal systems critical to the operation and growth of the Gigafactory and make design recommendations for optimal performance.

Responsibilities:

·  Physics basedmodeling and analysis of the Gigafactory thermal systems to optimize their design and operation:
·  Develop equipment models and integrate into a factory system model to forecast needs, inform infrastructure planning, and identify opportunities.
·  Evaluate technology options and make design recommendations to the factory engineering team to improve the performance, sustainability, safety and cost of thermal systems.
·  Thermal systemsinclude:heat pump and heat recovery systems, thermal energy storage, industrial refrigeration, cooling towers, industrial ovens anddriers, hydronic loops.
·  Interface with product design and manufacturing engineers to analyze the requirements of manufacturing processes, and identify opportunities for improved factory integration.
·  Analyze factory data to validate design assumptions, improvereal worldperformance of operating systems, and continue to identify additional optimization opportunities.
·  Assist with system troubleshooting and field investigations as needed to support onsite teams in order to ensure all thermal systems operate as designed.

Desired profile

Requirements:

·  BS in Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or equivalent. Master’s orPhDpreferred.
·  3+ yrs of relevant experience.
·  High energy individual, questions industry standards and state of the art, drivestowards optimal designs from 1 st principles.
·  Strong technical problem solver, system levelthinker capable of identifyinghighestimpact projects and making complex trade-offs.
·  Strong engineering fundamentals relevant to the Gigafactory equipment and processes: heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, process modeling, systems engineering and optimization, techno-economic analysis.
·  Analytical and quantitative mindset
·  Strong scientific programming skills (Matlab / Simulink, Python, EES or equivalent). Experience with commercial simulation packages (ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, Aspen or equivalent) is desirable.
·  Good at building relationships and working effectively with multiple and diverse teams. Eager to discuss engineering challenges and develop effective solutions to improve the design and operation of the Gigafactory.
·  Exposure to battery design and manufacturing, industrial thermal systems (heat pumps and heat recovery system, industrial cooling systems, hydronic loops, industrial ovens), and high throughput manufacturing is desirable.
