If you really want to make a difference – make it with us

With its 7,000 employees, Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) works hand in hand with the company’s business units to ensure Siemens’ future. CT conducts research with internal and external partners, including leading universities and promising start-ups. These collaborative endeavors focus on a wide range of future technologies with a view to securing them with patents and supporting them through commercialization. CT also provides development services for Siemens’ business units and supports them with methods and tools related to business excellence.

In the fields of 3D machine vision and optical metrology, scan registration is a frequent and challenging task. For a set of RGB-D scans (e.g. 3D point clouds), the problem consists in finding a set of transformations to align them in a common (world-)coordinate system. The objective of this thesis is to realize a novel scan registration concept using projected fiducial markers. The thesis will involve 3D Vision and potentially (but not mandatory) Machine Learning / Deep Learning techniques and basic optical considerations.

Your new role – challenging and future-oriented

·  Develop concepts, algorithms and software to realize the concept of scan registration using projected fiducial markers
·  Refine existing concepts for optical hardware to project appropriate marker patterns
·  Collaborate with Siemens and external experts in the field of 3D Computer Vision, Deep Learning, Optics and Metrology
·  Publish in scientific journals, participate in conferences and cooperate with partner universities

Your qualifications – solid and appropriate

·  University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics
·  Very good problem solving, analytical and programming skills (C++ required, MATLAB is a plus)
·  Creativity and high motivation for independent research
·  Demonstrated knowledge in the field of 3D Computer Vision
·  Experience with commonly used vision libraries OpenCV, PCL, Eigen
·  Machine Learning / Deep Learning experience is a plus
·  Basic experience with optical systems is a plus
