Job description

·  Job facts

Are you ready for your next challenge?

Our vision is to create novel and highly differentiated medicines. To this end, we discover and develop novel therapeutic antibodies and next generation biologics, such as bispecific antibodies or fusion proteins. Our ambition is to deliver these novel molecules to patients with game changing clinical benefit.

We are looking for a Scientist to establish disease-relevant cellular assays (3D co-cultures) with a keen interest in the fields of drug discovery and development. You will join the department of Immune and Cell Biology, which belongs to a unit called Large Molecule Research within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). This position therefore offers the opportunity to interact with numerous functions within Roche also at different sites to deliver novel medicines to patients.

Your team in a nutshell:

You will be cooperating with a team of scientists within a functional matrix of highly skilled and experienced lab co-workers and peers.

The job in a nutshell:

Your work focuses on functional assays that mimic the mode of action for a drug target in vitro using cell based systems. You have a strong background in immune and cell biology, particularly in complex 3D cell culture experiments. You will establish primary cell assays ranging from cancer cells to immune cells (adaptive and myeloid) as well as neuronal cells, focusing on 3 D culture systems.

The main tasks of this position:

·  You will establish and perform in vitro cellular assays to mimic the mode of action for biologics in drug development. The cellular systems and setup you built will vary from project to project, but often focuses on the establishment of co-cultures such as 3D culture systems. These can include potentially a variety of different primary cell types, including induced pluripotent stem cells (IPs cell) and patient derived cells or tissues.
·  Troubleshooting by integrating a broad biological understanding and strong experience in modern 3D cell culture systems is your daily business.
·  You establish these biological readouts for a broad spectrum of biologics and for differentDisease Therapeutic Areas (DTAs), which may e.g. include autoimmune diseases, cancers, neurological diseases or eye diseases.
·  You will also use a variety of functional readouts, which includeFACS, ELISA, Confocal and reporter cell systems, which are used to elucidate the mode of action of therapeutic proteins.
·  You will be member of local and global project teams where you represent your results to the teams and the main department.
·  The transfer of the established readouts and protocols to other units within pRED also belongs to your responsibilities.
·  You will be part of and supporting a highly ambitious team within the department of Immune and Cell Biology that belongs to Large Molecule Research (LMR), but also closely collaborate with all Disease Therapeutic Areas (DTAs) and Pharmaceutical Science (PS).

This is also very important for us:

Team player: You are passionate about building strong teams. In your teams, everyone shares the success while setbacks are viewed as an opportunity to learn.

Change: You thrive on situations involving uncertainty and help others see the opportunity of change.

Being courageous: You tackle difficult issues with confidence and you hold things together during tough times.

Organizational awareness: You see the big picture and have a clear understanding of other group's business needs.

Continuous learning: You enjoy the challenges of unfamiliar tasks to continuously learn new things. You seek novel approaches to solve problems and to challenge the status quo.

Presentation skills: You know how to present in a clear and convincing way before big audiences and management boards.

And the technical requirements for this position?

·  Abitur or equivalent graduation diploma
·  University degree in biochemistry, biology, immunology or similar area including PhD or master degree and several years of relevant professional experience
·  Project management
·  Fluent English language skills
·  IT (and data analysis) skills (MS Office)
·  Expertise in various reporter and primary cell assays (for innate and adaptive immune cells, cancer and/or neuronal cells). Specific expertise and strong background in the following techniques and readouts: FACS analysis, Western Blot, ELISA and Luciferase activity assays.
·  Experience in complex 3D culture systems using primary cells

This position is limited for 2 years.

We look forward to receiving your application!

Your application:

For your application, please keep it simple. We only ask you for an updated CV. A motivation letter might not be mandatory. However, please let us get to know you by submitting a short essay (max. half a page) exposing the meaning the following topic has to you:

“Mindset, scientific community, organizational setup and/or modern technologies: What does it need to successfully establish and mimic the biological mode of action for drug discovery?”
