Job description

IBM Germany is the largest IBM entity in Europe; it is spread over more than 20 different locations in Germany. It also houses the largest IBM development laboratory outside the USA, with a headcount of approximately 1,800 employees located in Böblingen. The patent attorney position is to be filled immediately in the headquarters of IBM Germany, located in Ehningen (near Stuttgart). The IBM Intellectual Property (IP) function in Germany is in charge of Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland and various countries in Eastern Europe.

By joining the IBM Intellectual Property function, you will become part of a global company which holds Intellectual Property, its protection, exploitation and its practitioners in a prominent position:
- IBM received a record of 8088 patents in 2016 - marking the 24th consecutive year that the company topped the annual list of U.S. patent recipients,
- a worldwide portfolio of over 45,000 patents (by far the largest United States patent holder) for all technologies ranging from hardware and software to services,
- thousands of registered trademarks,
- a vast number of software and other copyrighted material,
- world class Intellectual Property licensing operations.

This position involves the full range of services in Intellectual Property such as identification of patentable inventions, drafting and prosecution of patent applications, oppositions, patent enforcement, infringement risk and validity assessments as well as giving advice and counsel to the business and drafting/negotiating IP contracts and agreements.

A successful candidate should
- possess an excellent degree in either electrical engineering, physics, computer science or a related discipline,
- be fluent in English and German,
- have passed both the Patent Attorney German Qualification Exam and the European Qualifying Exam,
- have gained several years of experience in the profession, and
- have excellent social, communication and negotiation skills.
