Role Summary/Purpose

As a Lead Scientist – Functional Materials you will conduct research on the processing of advanced ceramic materials for high-temperature applications including Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) and Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs). The focus will be on process-microstructural-property relationships.
Essential Responsibilities

You will: 

·  Conduct basic and applied research in processes for developing stable, high temperature oxide and non-oxide ceramics of interest to GE businesses 
·  Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of high temperature material systems including ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) 
·  Develop research objectives and action plans to address technical challenges of interest to GE businesses 
·  Invent and patent when appropriate 
·  Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Global Research, GE businesses, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate
Qualifications/Requirements

·  Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid-State Physics or related field with experience in high temperature ceramics
·  Minimum 2 years post-graduate experience
·  Post-graduate level understanding of material structure-property relationship at various length-scales, mechanical properties of ceramics at room temperature and high-temperatures
·  Post-graduate level understanding of thermochemistry of ceramics, such as chemical interactions, surface and interface reactions
·  Understanding and working knowledge of powder processing, sintering, and phase equilibria
·  Working knowledge and hands on experience with characterization tools, such as optical and scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis methods
·  Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications 
·  Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening.
·  Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics

·  Hands-on experiences with EBC or TBC, or other multilayer ceramic coatings
Working knowledge with coating techniques, such as thermal plasma spray or slurry based coating processes 
·  Experience in application of thermodynamics/kinetics to high temperature processes 
·  Experience in application of fracture mechanics to coating cracking and coating spallation 

·  Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment 
·  Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems 
·  Excellent oral and written communication skills
