Description of the job

A vacancy for a Scientist – Materials (m/f/d) has arisen within Airbus Defence and Space in Munich. The successful applicant will join “Materials X”.

Tasks & accountabilities

·  Establish work programme for failure analysis, perform the associated analysis and write corresponding test reports in direct link with the customers from Airbus divisions or CR&T

·  Perform and interpret macroscopic and microscopic examinations

·  Perform and interpret analysis in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) including EDX analysis

·  Perform and interpret X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis

·  Perform and interpret analysis in the optical emission spectroscope (OES)

·  Contribution to the development of new methods for accurate in-service failure analysis

·  Identify failure root cause

·  Propose improvement solution(s)

·  Manage the associated apparatus: investment proposal, maintenance and calibration

Required skills

·  Scientific background in materials and mechanical engineering or similar

·  Comprehensive know-how and overview of various analytical techniques for failure analysis (principles, limitations)

·  Profound knowledge and experience in

·  Metallic materials and processes

·  Metallurgy and microstructural investigation techniques

·  Knowledge and experience in

·  Surface technology

·  Composite materials and processes

·  Degradation behaviour and degradation mechanisms of materials

·  Fracture mechanics

·  Hands-on, solution oriented and pragmatic

·  Ability to work with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment

·  Awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity

·  Fluent German and English, knowledge of French is beneficial
