Duration: 3-6 months

The Airbus Defence and Space site Potsdam is engaged in the analysis of remote sensing data for earth observation and the development of products based on this data. An emphasis lies on the enhancement of products from the radar satellite mission TanDEM-X which aims to create a global, high-resolution Digital Elevation Modell (DEM) and derivatives which can be used for applications such as aerial navigation and mapping.
The internship will contribute to the development of a global water surface layer derived from the TanDEM-X data. This “WorldDEM Hydro Layer” (WHL) will be a very accurate and detailed depiction of all global water bodies. The aim of the internship is to extend and improve the process by using the Python language and tools.

Tasks & accountabilities

Geospatial analysis of raster and vector data with Python for

·  The extraction of watersheds (drainage basins) on different scales
·  The pour Point (drainage point) extraction of lake features
·  The Extension of attribute information (e.g. Lake and river names, shoreline complexity, etc.)

For the improvement and successive operationalization of the WHL, the above listed methods shall be investigated. This comprises the following tasks:

·  Proposing approaches to transfer algorithms into Python
·  Implementation and tests of those tools
·  Joint review of the results and possible alterations
·  Documentation

Required skills

You offer:

·  Enrolled student within computer science, (geo) computer science, geosciences, cartography or similar field of study
·  Advanced knowledge of programming in Python environments
·  Experience in working with GDAL libraries
·  Experience in raster data processing with Python
·  Experience with Python extensions NumPy and SciPy
·  Good command of the English language

You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.
