Internship within Space Engineering: MICROSLOSH Experiment

Airbus Defence and Space Friedrichshafen (ex Astrium SL)

Airbus is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2017, it generated revenues of € 67 billion and employed a workforce of around 130,000. Airbus offers the most comprehensive range of passenger airliners from 100 to more than 600 seats. Airbus is also a European leader providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft, as well as Europe's number one space enterprise and the world's second largest space business. In helicopters, Airbus provides the most efficient civil and military rotorcraft solutions worldwide.

Our people work with passion and determination to make the world a more connected, safer and smarter place. Taking pride in our work, we draw on each other's expertise and experience to achieve excellence. Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.

Description of the job

Are you looking for an internship? Would you like to discover the work of a Space Engineering? Then apply now! We look forward to you joining us as an intern (m/f) at the AOCS/GNC Department (35 hours/week, flexi-time).

Location: Friedrichshafen
Start: October/November
Duration: 5-6 months

You will support MICROSLOSH, an ongoing DLR and Airbus Defence and Space Research Development project. MICROSLOSH is a propellant sloshing experiment that will be performed on-board the ISS. Main objectives of MICROSLOSH are:

·  Characterization of liquid sloshing in slewing spacecraft by acquisition of long Duration microgravity data under different operational conditions
·  Benchmarking and validation of in-house Computational Fluid-Dynamics sloshing models and tools uncoupled or coupled to the spacecraft dynamics and its AOCS control system.

Internships at Airbus

Desired profile

Tasks & accountabilities

·  Complete the development of the MICROSLOSH Simulator: Matlab/Simulink simulator to model the closed-loop dynamics and kinematics of the test set-up (restricted to solid body part) including dynamics model, environment model, equipment models (sensors and actuators) and the control system / guidance model.
·  The MICROSLOSH Simulator is combined to a Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model (provided as input to this work) into one common framework and will be used by the selected candidate to generate the reference data (coupled test-cases) for the experiment.
·  System identification methods applied to the numerical simulations and/or available experimental results
·  Investigation of methodologies to calibrate the experimental set-up on-ground and inflight, including preparation of on-ground test campaign
·  Define EM functional test campaign (e.g. definition of test procedures/test plan, compare numerical/analytical reference data with test data, etc.)
·  Perform EM functional tests (verify correctness of functional performances of EM w.r.t. required functions, verify and optimise Engineering Model HW performance by means of control loop / SW optimisation , verify calibration procedures)

Required skills

You offer:

·  Enrolled student within Aerospace Engineering or similar field of study
·  Good knowledge of Matlab/Simulink environment
·  Sound knowledge of control theory
·  Sound knowledge of control theory, modelling & Simulation
·  Basic knowledge of system identification methods”
·  English: fluent (Documentation in English)

You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.

Make every future a success.
