Within the field of satellite instrument structures Airbus Defence and Space is developing on new innovative, reliable and efficient surface treatments on materials for space applications. As one of the key technologies laser surface treatment is a promising method to adjust materials surface properties for different purposes.

Desired profile

Tasks & accountabilities

The aim of this thesis is a benchmark study & process validation regarding new laser based surface treatments for different materials like Ti64, SiC & CFRP. This means to identify new laser systems & future applications as well as to compare current state of the art processes with new developed technologies. Furthermore also other key technologies like plasma treatments should be included. This will enhance the picture of the complete life cycle of each technology from technical to economic aspects, validated by theoretical comparisons and practical tests.

Your responsibilities will include:

·  Literature research with regard to the state of the art and preliminary work
·  Benchmark study on comparable systems and future applications as well as cost/time/performance study of diverse surface treatments
·  Planning & definition of test programmes
·  Preparation and execution of measurements and tests under laboratory conditions as well as evaluation and interpretation of test results
·  Scientific discussion and conclusion of experimental procedure in comparison to preliminary results
·  Documentation and presentation of development results

Required skills

You offer:

·  Enrolled student (m/f) field of mechanical engineering or comparable graduation, experience or specialisation in industrialization or production engineering are highly welcome
·  Willingness to work independently, high level of motivation for learning and improvement of skills, personal initiative and the ability for efficient timing
·  Team spirit and willingness to co-operate and working together in an international company
·  Knowledge in Office software like Excel, Word etc.
·  Knowledge in creativity techniques are welcome
·  Skills in engineering software like CAD, FEM are welcome
·  Fluent English
·  Fluent German is a plus
