Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Abbott Diabetes Care is part of Abbott Laboratories and is one of the leading manufacturers of cutting edge glucose monitoring systems for the home and hospital diabetes markets.  The system consists of a hand-held meter or smartphone app, and disposable test strips or on-body patch containing a sensor.  The meters are developed in Alameda, California, and the strips and sensors developed and manufactured in the UK, at Witney, near Oxford.

The placements will last for approximately 12 months, beginning in July/August 2019.

Placements will be in the Research & Development department.  They will be based in the state-of-the-art facility at Witney, which opened in May 2003.  The projects that are envisaged include:

- Design of proto-type and proof of principle machines and test fixtures.

- Characterisation and development of machinery and test equipment.

- Development of next generation sensor devices and processes.

The projects would suit students studying a Mechanical Engineering based degree with an interest in manufacturing equipment design and build in a regulated, high volume environment.

The R&D Department has several ongoing projects, into which the student will be expected to contribute, as well as being assigned a specific project to own. The day to day activities of the R&D group vary depending on the nature of the project assigned but typically include design of equipment and jigs, production of detailed drawings, overseeing fabrication, equipment assembly, experimental testing, data analysis, problem solving and report writing. Students will also be required to present their results within the project team, and in some cases to the rest of the department.  There will also be regular interactions with other departments including Scientists, Electronics, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs.

The student will receive full Health and Safety training in accordance with company policy.  They will be expected to adhere to Health and Safety policy at all times.  To fulfil job requirements, full training where required will be provided. The students will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week, although some extra work may be required to meet specific deadlines.

To apply, please submit your CV and cover letter. The closing date is 28th Feb 2020. By submitting your application, you consent for your details to be shared with Adecco, our Third Party Labour supplier, who are working on behalf of Abbott on this position.
