Afterwards there is the possibility for writing a final thesis, upon agreement with the department.

An essential part during the development of a spacecraft is to implement a thermal model which is used for temperature predictions throughout the mission phases. This thermal model has to be correlated with measurements from thermal tests, in order to achieve a good accuracy of the assessed temperatures.

To improve thermal model correlations in quality and effort, a new approach for thermal model correlation is currently in the process of implementation. An automated thermal model correlation tool based on MATLAB has been developed, named TAUMEL (Tool for AUto-mated Model correlation using Equation Linearization).

TAUMEL is tailored for thermal models built in ESATAN-TMS and makes extensive use of MATLAB functionalities. In a first phase the methods of the correlation logic and the general data processing have been defined and implemented into MATLAB. In the second phase, the correlation tool was improved with respect to the numerical optimization method. Furthermore, first validation steps using larger thermal models were performed.

The candidate will learn to work with the thermal analysis tool ESATAN-TMS used for several thermal analyses. A major part of the work will be the familiarization of TAUMEL and its algorithms, implemented in MATLAB. This contains also physical understanding in thermodynamics, such as working with the heat diffusion equation.

Tasks & accountabilities

The internship aims on the further development and finalization of TAUMEL functionalities, and its validation on actual test data and thermal models of flight hardware.

The following tasks are proposed to be performed within the internship:

·  Further develop and refine TAUMEL main functions

1. Implementation of Thermal Desktop for TAUMEL
2. Conversion of TAUMEL in a self-executing data format

·  Test and validate the tool performance

1. Manually established thermal models
2. Available thermal models and test data (from Launcher & Orbital systems) with complex structure
3. Troubleshooting/debugging

·  Optimize the tool handling

1. Improve usability
2. GUI handling
3. Documentation/ Preparation of a user manual

Required skills

You offer:

·  Enrolled student within Physics, Information Technology, General Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar field of study
·  Programming in MATLAB
·  Good mathematical understanding
·  Physical understanding in thermodynamics
·  German/English: negotiation level/advanced

You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.
